What I Love About It
It is multigenerational in a way that promotes families. While not all of the families in this are perfect…actually, none of them are because what family is, students navigate these realities of life (and fiction) in a sensitive way that helps students understand adults have problems too and sometimes, you need to trust them, even with all their flaws.
The Mysteries of Cove by J. Scott Savage

Trenton, a 13-year-old boy with a creative mind and a kind heart, lives in a world where creativity is illegal. The citizens of Cove, a steam-powered city, hidden in a mountain, can only repair broken things- not invent new ways to do anything. In fact, the word “inventor” is a naughty word there.
Kallista, a young repair technician, is the daughter of Leo Babbage. Her father died in an explosion that is used as an example by the leaders of Cove of the dangers of creativity.
Together, the unlikely duo continue work on a secret project Kallista’s father had started before he died. They soon discover their project will either destroy their world…or maybe it will be the most important thing they ever do.

What I Love About It
Let me start with this: steampunk + dragons. Seriously, do you need anything else?
You do? Okay…
It is a fantastic book about students learning to pursue their passions, the importance of creativity, and navigating disagreements within families and friendships. Mr. Savage accomplishes all of this while still being delightfully entertaining.
